The Federal Government through the Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba, has said that SS3 students may have to sit for the General Certificate Examinations (GCE) in November if there is no shift in the timetable of the West African Examination Council (WAEC).
The Minister revealed this during the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 briefing on Thursday, July 23, in Abuja.
FG Considering GCE as Replacement for WAEC Exams – Minister
According to him, sitting for GCE examinations may become the only option for Nigerian students if the government cannot convince WAEC to shift its examinations.
He further added that, in the event that Nigeria finally meets up with the WAEC timetable, subjects such as Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba will have to be shifted behind to make room for writing of general subjects with other participating countries.
Nwajiuba said that the government would meet with stakeholders again on July 30, to review the guidelines, provisions, and preparations for safe reopening of schools.
